can I get into grad school for chemistry if it was my undergrad minor?
My one professor majored in Geology and got accepted into chem grad school, now has a PhD in chem. My one friend has her B.S. in Biology, minor in English and got into grad school for English. Does it have to be your major for you to apply to grad school? What if I scored very well in my chem GRE also?
I have chem I & II
Organic chem I & II
Analytical Chem
Some physics & calc
I already meet the minor requirements for my university for chemistry
You will almost certainly need to take several courses to be on par with a chemistry major applying for graduate school.
Off the top of my head, you are going to need the following: Pre-Requisites *At least one year of calculus *At least one year of physics Chemistry *One year of general chemistry *One year of organic chemistry *Probably at least one semester of biochemistry *One year of themodynamics (calculus-based math heavy) *Analytical Chemistry *Possibly Inorganic Chemistry *Possibly undergraduate research How many of these courses have you taken so far? There are probably a couple of courses I've forgotten or am not aware of. |

Yes, it is possible but it depends on the school. You will absolutely have to make up the deficiency coursework, which would be a year of calculus-based physical chemistry (and you need the necessary math prereq, usually calc 3/4) with its labs, an organic/inorganic synthesis lab, and possibly more. Some schools may request you make up the coursework prior to being admitted, while others you can be admitted assuming you have a decent enough GPA, and you make up the coursework in your first year of the program.

You don't need to major in the subject to go to graduate school in the subject. What you need to do is show that you know the subject well by doing well in your chem specific subject GRE. If you did that then you have a good chance of finding a university that will accept you in the program. Depending on the university, they might make you take an exam prior to start of the semester so they know if you need to take some undergraduate courses. If you passed the placement exam ok then you just fall in place with every other chemistry grad student.
If you know your chem pretty well, you need not worry about other things except doing well in graduate school once you get accepted. So make sure you do well in the GRE, general and specific, and that you did well in the minor classes that you took in undergrad. |
