High School Bio Honors question?
1. Choose a category that interests you from the list below:
Chemistry Astronomy Engineering
Medicine Geology Oceanography
Genetics Botany Ecology
Veterinary Science Forensics Meteorology
Dentistry Computer Science
2. Research your category to find a topic within that category that you find interesting or
would like to learn more about (Example: Category-Forensics, Topic-DNA evidence)

I have to pick one for a biology project.
What would you pick?
High School Bio Honors question?
For me, anyway, genetics is very interesting.
The Human Genome Project that was completed a few years ago has revealed the details of the DNA in our bodies. However, finding out what genes (usually several thousand "base pairs" of DNA in a row) are in our DNA and what they do and how they do it is something people will be working on for decades. So, within the category of genetics, choose something that genes have an effect on, and research that. Here are 4 that interest me: 1. The so-called HLA genes in the "MHC" Major Histocompatibility Complex region of the human chromosome 6. These vary a lot from person to person. This variability is the main reason why organ transplants (liver, heart, lung, bone marrow etc.) are rejected by the body of the person they are trans- planted into. A lot of good information can be found at http://www.marrow.org for bone marrow transplants to help people with leukemia. 2. Some diseases are either caused by or strongly related to the details in a particular gene. One is Huntington's Disease and the gene affecting it is on human chromosome 4. The most curious thing about the variation in this gene that causes HD is that a certain triple of nucleotides (CAG) is always repeated a bunch of times in everybody's DNA, but if it is repeated too many times in a person's DNA they are likely to get HD. AND furthermore, the more repeats there are, the younger the person is when he/she will get the disease. A famous folk-singer Woody Guthrie died from HD. 3. Who is Gregor Mendel? Do some historical research on him. He was the first biologist to do serious work in genetics. He did his experiments with pea plants. 4. What biologists have gotten a Nobel Prize and what did they do? But all this above is just my opinion. Go to the science section of your school or public library and look through some books about biology or nature and see if something there interests you. Have fun. |
