Children with autism have a different chemical fingerprint in their urine than non-autistic children, according to new research published tomorrow in the print edition of the Journal of Proteome Research. The researchers behind the study, from Imperial College London and the University of South Australia, suggest that their findings could ultimately lead to a simple urine test to determine whether or not a young child has autism. Autism affects an estimated one in every 100 people in the UK. People with autism have a range of different symptoms, but they commonly experience problems with communication and social skills, such as understanding other people?s emotions and making conversation and eye contact.

A new study from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA suggests that increasing cigarette taxes could be an effective way to reduce smoking among individuals with alcohol, drug or mental disorders. The study, published online in the American Journal of Public Health, found that a 10 percent increase in cigarette pricing resulted in an 18.2 percent decline in smoking among people in these groups. The findings demonstrate that increasing cigarette taxes could be a way to curb smoking, which is still the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, according to the study?s lead author, Dr. Michael Ong, an assistant professor of medicine in the division of general internal medicine and health services research at the Geffen School of Medicine.

Over 90 percent of psychiatric patients who received treatment in community hospitals were cared for in hospital-based psychiatric specialty units, according to a study sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and published today in Psychiatric Services. The study investigated the extent to which community hospitals treated patients with psychiatric disorders in specialty psychiatric units versus general medical beds (sometimes known as ?scatter? beds.) The study focused on community hospitals and did not examine care in free standing psychiatric hospitals or other settings.Overall, 93.2 percent of patients admitted to hospitals with psychiatric disorders were cared for in psychiatric units and 6.8 percent were assigned to scatter beds.

Smoking pot may be linked to worsening schizophrenia, according to a new study.Researchers say the results also suggest that among those likely to develop the disease, those who use marijuana may get the disease earlier in life than those who don?t.The findings don?t prove that smoking marijuana causes schizophrenia, and the study only looked at people who already had the disease. But, ?smoking marijuana may have hastened whatever process was going to happen anyway,? Daniel Foti, a PhD student at Stony Brook University on New York?s Long Island and the lead author on the study, told Reuters Health.

A major study of more than a million children has found strong links between receiving medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and limited maternal education, single parent families and welfare benefits, according to the June issue of Acta Paediatrica Swedish experts teamed up to carry out what they believe is the first study of risk factors for ADHD in a national cohort of school children, based on 1.16 million children on the country?s Prescribed Drug Register. ?We identified 7,960 Swedish-born children, aged between six and 19, using a prescription for ADHD medication as our indicator of severe ADHD? explains lead author Professor Anders Hjern from the Centre for Health Equity Studies, a collaboration between the Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University.

Exposure to the common virus that causes cold sores may be partially responsible for shrinking regions of the brain and the loss of concentration skills, memory, coordinated movement and dexterity widely seen in patients with schizophrenia, according to research led by Johns Hopkins scientists.?We?re finding that some portion of cognitive impairment usually blamed solely on the disease of schizophrenia might actually be a combination of schizophrenia and prior exposure to herpes simplex virus 1 infection, which reproduces in the brain,? says study leader David J. Schretlen, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The research, described in the May Schizophrenia Research, could lead to new ways to treat or prevent the cognitive impairment that typically accompanies this mental illness, including with antiviral drugs, the scientists say.

Neither obesity nor simple overeating will be included in the DSM-5, the forthcoming revision to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Diseases, but binge eating is on track to become a formal psychiatric diagnosis, it was reported here. The addition of binge eating is one of several changes within the eating disorders category in the DSM, according to B. Timothy Walsh, MD, of Columbia University in New York City, head of the DSM-5 work group in this clinical area. But, said Walsh in a report here at the American Psychiatric Association?s (APA) annual meeting, he and his colleagues did not believe there was enough hard evidence to support creating a psychiatric diagnosis for obesity or overeating.

Prescribing heroin to addicts who can?t kick their habit helps them stay off street drugs, British researchers said Friday. So far, doctors have had little hope of treating the 10 percent or more of heroin users who don?t respond to methadone, the standard anti-addiction medication. Fueled by drug cravings, those users often spiral downward into crime and diseases spread by dirty needles and unhealthy living.Short of actually getting addicts off the drug, ?heroin clinics? can at least get them off the streets.

Inner structure of nerve synapses defective in patients / Human geneticists from Heidelberg publish in ?Nature Genetics?Researchers working with Professor Gudrun Rappold, Director of the Department of Molecular Human Genetics at Heidelberg University Hospital, have discovered previously unknown mutations in autistic and mentally impaired patients in what is known as the SHANK2 gene, a gene that is partially responsible for linking nerve cells. However, a single gene mutation is not always enough to trigger the illness. In some cases, a certain threshold of mutation must be exceeded. The researchers conclude from their results that a correct inner structure of the nerve cell synapses is necessary to enable the normal development of language, social competence, and cognitive capacity. Essential for the success of the project were the studies by the Heidelberg research team with the doctoral student Simone Berkel and collaboration with a Canadian research team headed by Steve Scherer. The study has already been published online in the leading scientific journal ?Nature Genetics?.Autism is a congenital perception and information-processing disorder of the brain that is often associated with low intelligence, but also with above-average intelligence. The disease is characterized by limited social communication and stereotypical or ritualized behavior.

Researchers, led by Kerri Boutelle, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have found that obesity is a risk factor for depressive symptoms, but not for clinical depression, suggesting that weight status could play a part in the development of depression in some adolescent girls. ?This is important, because depressive symptoms are considered a precursor to major depression,? said Boutelle. According to the Centers for Disease and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity among adolescents aged 12 to 19 years increased from 5.0 percent to 18.1 percent in 2008. Similarly, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an annual survey sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, found that 2.0 million youths aged 12 to 17 experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2007.
