Are there any benefits to receiving porcelain fillings versus amalgam or resin?
Porcelain fillings also termed porcelain inlays and onlays are generally more wear resistant and esthetically pleasing compared to either amalgam or resin.
As always consult with your dentist for further evaluation. Frank Liu DDS, FAGD |

You should ask your dentist for pros/cons because every situation is different. Porcelain inlays will generally last longer than resin. Amalgam will last a long time, but it is not as esthetic as porcelain. In a patient that didn't floss, I would go with amalgam over the other two, because it seals itself and has some anticariogenic properties. Porcelain fillings cost about 4x as much as the other two. If you are willing to pay for porcelain on the back teeth, you should also consider gold on the back teeth -- costs the same and many dentists would argue it is the longest lasting, healthiest option. Take care.

If you are referring specifically to cerec, then my answer is as follows:
Cerec is a porcelain restoration that is made in ONE visit to an equipped dental office. The dentist drills the tooth in preparation for a filling, veneer or crown. An image of the preparation is fed to a computerized lathe that fabricates a precision-tooled filling, veneer or crown which is cemented onto or into the tooth. Because the system is computerized the restoration fits precisely. Porcelain is, of course, a very esthetic, strong restoration. Once in place, it is almost impossible, even for dental professionals, to identify or locate a Cerec restoration. That's how great they look and fit. For those who can afford it, Cerec IS the way to go. |
