Eeek! I need Root Canal Treatment?

and it is going to cost me £380. Do private dental practises allow you to pay in installments? I don't think my dentist does but if I could find one that does it would be great. I'm a full time student so I can't afford it all in one go. I'm not bothering with the NHS form because the last NHS dentist I had messed up - and its his fault that I need this treatment to begin with.
Also, my new dentist gave me antibiotics to calm down my tooth infection. He said my symptoms may pass altogether for a while because my problem isn't as bad as it could be. And that would be brilliant if I could hold this off til after Christmas. Does anyone know how long antibiotics will take to start killing this infection?
I can stand some degree of pain because I've had worse, but its the noises of the dentists that freaks me out. Will I be allowed to take my iPod?
Sorry for so many questions!
I woudn't care if I had my tooth out. But its a slightly visible tooth. The top 5th on my left. And a bridge will cost more. My actual tooth is in really good condition. But my previous dentist had put a small filling in but he went too deep so it slightly touches to root area. Will my tooth still crack? I'm looking for NHS dentists in Taunton - no luck just yet! But I'll look for them in other towns too.
Did you know that NHS and private dentists are effectively one and the same> that an NHS dentist will carry out private work? So you unlikely to receive any different treatment for your £380.

If the tooth is not visible, I suggest you get it removed. It is less expensive and healthier. I spent a lot of money on a root canal and then the tooth split. After all that, I then I had to pay more to have it pulled. Which is what I wish I would have done in the first place.
Deal with it one way or the other immediately. The infection can go to your heart.

I agree with snetterton, my NHS dentis carries out private consultations in his surgery, they all seem to do this, I also know of so called private dentists that have really messed things up, go via a recommendation, ask around, search on the web rather than just think it'll be ok cos it's private.

If it's a really bad infection you are likely to be put on a course of metronidasol for a week. This is one of the most powerful antibiotics and you definately cant drink on this one or you will be seriously ill.

I was petrified of my root canal when it happened till my dentist explained that the pain was due to the infection not the root. The reason you need this procedure is becasue the root is dead and they need to remove it to prevent it getting infected as when it is (as we both know) it's bloody painful! But becasue the root is dead when it's not infected it's not painful at all! And trust me once you've dealt with the infection the procedure really isn't that bad, but obviously with people rummaging round in your mouth it isn't one of the pleasures of life either, just need to grin and bear it.

Not sure about the ipod, I'd ask but might be a no as they need you to be aware of how wide to open your mouth, when to rinse etc.

Good luck.

I had this done & it fell out after 6months,they put it back &6months later it snapped off & I had to have it all drilled out.A total waste of money, pain & aggravation.I now have a bridge fitted,it was very expensive but I now have a comfortable mouth for the first time in years.Dental prices vary from one dentist to another,if you dont have a regular one,I recommend you do a ring around for prices or go with one that is recommended by a friend. As for paying by instalments,I would imagine only a dentist that you have been with for some time & knows you might allow this.Otherwise if its not visible, just have it out.

Eeek! I need Root Canal Treatment?

You poor thing! i had root canal when i was 15, I'm 39 now and not been to the dentist since. I wasn't scared before that but now I'm terrified of the dentist. I know it was a long time ago and things have moved on, but Lordy- Dawdy it really really hurt. my Auntie had one done the other month, and although the dentist can see no problem she's still in lots of pain, and has been given an anti-depressant with a sedative effect to help her sleep and get through the day. If i was you I'd try not to go. Not good advise i know, but i can't think of anything positive to say.Maybe I should have just kept my opinions to myself... sorry.
