It will be very difficult, no doubt. Try distracting him/her with something else that keeps the hands busy. Some parents may disagree with this, but try bribery!! A favorite candy or new movie they have been dying to see if they can go for a time period without the thumb!! Make a chart, when they can go for let's say 3 days without it, reward them in some way. You also need to look at anything that may be bothering them, the thumb could be a security thing?? Just some thoughts!!

Re: how to stop thumb sucking in kids aged 7?
removable methods to stop thumb sucking such as thumb cap or plastering finger can be removed by the patient itself.
use fixed methods like banding upper molars and palatal cleat to insert a tongue crib reverted |

Re: how to stop thumb sucking in kids aged 7?
1. Don't pressure your child to stop, this can reinforce the habit
2. Talk to them about the reasons and ways to work together to stop the habit 3.Praise them when they do not suck their thumb, caught them doing things right! 4. If your child's teeth are moving, talk to your dentist for personalized advice. 5.Set up an incentive system to reward their progress 6. Don't get frustrated with your child; this tends to make the habit worse. 7. If they suck because they feel insecure, focus on eliminating the cause of the anxiety or if they do it for comfort, offer them comfort instead of sucking their thumb. 8.Have them hold balls in their hands while they sleep so their hands are busy. 9. Taping the end of the thumb 10.Reward them for NOT sucking their thumbs 11. If your child is older, involve them in choosing the method of stopping if nothing changed go to your dentist they may use some Various orthodontic appliances, employed to attenuate and eventually break the habit. Removable appliances used may be palatal crib, rakes, palatal, arch, lingual spurs. Hawley’s retainer with and without spurs. Fixed appliances such as upper lingual tongue screens appear to be more effective in breaking these habits. If the child has made appreciable changes in his habit by 3 months, the appliances can be safely removed for a testing period. If gross signs of anxiety are aroused e.g. bed wetting, bad dreams, etc, the appliance should be removed. |
